“Be passionately passionate about your passion”
- Duncan Johnson
Duncan Johnson is a saxophonist born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa
He started out his musical career playing drums in church when he was 12 years old. Since then, he has learned to play multiple instruments in high-school such as guitar, bass guitar, and piano. In 2011 he picked up the alto saxophone for the first time and fell in love with it.
After taking a gap year for travels, he started his studies at the University of Cape Town as a tenor saxophone player, with Jazz Composition and Arrangement in 2014. He is now a full-time musician, composer, and arranger who has a huge love for Cape Jazz and the classics created by the likes of Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Coltrane and Miles Davis.

He is a part of many bands in Cape Town including The Hannepoot Brass Band, The Little Giants Big Band (in which he sometimes plays bass guitar), PB&J in which he plays upright bass and sessions in some other smaller groups.

His Objective? To make Cape Jazz more popular than it already is.
Duncan has been picking up popularity in the jazz world of Cape Town. His on-stage performances boast a huge selection of South Africa’s greatest musicians including Mark Fransman, George Werner, Mandla Mlangeni, Glen Robertson, Hilton Schilder, etc. He wishes to one day make a name for himself by spreading love through his saxophone and compositions.
